Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance for GameCube - Utilizing the 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons rule set, Dark Alliance blends hack-n-slash gameplay with RPG sensibilities. Players begin their adventure by selecting one of the three available character types: the Human archer, the Dwarven fighter, or the Elven sorceress. Each character class offers its own strength and weaknesses, but all are basically templates with plenty of room for customization. Your hero or heroine gains experience points by defeating enemies in combat. After acquiring enough experience, your character gains a level and attribute points, which can be distributed to learn new abilities or gain strength. Interplay accurately describes this game as an "action RPG." The action-oriented fight mechanics emphasize correctly timed button presses. Familiar RPG elements include character building and equipping various items and magic. By RPG standards, conversation is minimal. Attacks come in three basic forms: Close-combat, range and spell.
